Want to leave Sainsburys

Hi, my mother in law has been working at sainsburys for 15 years and is almost 65, they have told her she needs to give 6 months notice!
Can anyone shed some light in the subject?
She is a good hard worker and I know they wouldn't want her to leave ;-)
Thanks
Brian

What does her contract say? I've heard of significant people in various industries having to give 3 months instead of 1 month, but 6 months sounds very strange. Are they talking about retirement notice instead of simply leaving?"Save £12k in 2019" #120 - £100,699.57/£100,0000

That sounds very odd. I thought that employers couldn't ask you to leave your job now when you reached retirement age. Many supermarkets seem to actively recruit older people. My mums cousin works in Morrison's and I think she's about 84!0

By the way Brian, I'm quite new to this too, it's a bit addictive when you get the hang of it

Mum's friend worked for Sainsburys was on their books for 13 years. She only gave 3 weeks notice for her retirement.
I am seriously looking for another job - hopefully a transfer first after a couple of colleagues have said things about me which are untrue. I think employers should relax the rules if they can see that an employee is very unhappy and not putting 100% into their work. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I have to give 4 weeks notice to leave (not near retirement age yet and only worked there 14 months so will be a totally different contract), can she ring hrss direct (there should be little cards to take on the hr noticeboard at work) as they will be able to give her more relevent advice?0

Contractual notice to leave.
guidelines are 6 month for retirement so the employer can meet some commitments to deal with retirees.
Seek clarification on where this 6 month come from.0 -
Is it 6 months to say she doesn't want to retire?
However I think getmore4less is on the right track, that this could be so that the employer has time to sort out pension payments. I don't know their pension plan arrangements but for someone who has perhaps worked for them on differing hours/week etc (and these may change in the coming 6 months), they need to allow a good deal of time to establish what is due.0 -
They may have also mixed up the requirement that they the employer has to give 6 months notice to retire people.

I agree it sounds like this.
In my organisation, the notice period is 1 month for most staff, but you need to give 6 months if you want to retire so that the pension can be sorted.0 -

BlueSky1 - the op is saying that their mother in law wants to retire not they are making them.
From my payroll days you get a notification about the person approaching retirement age and you have to fill it in if the person is going to continue to work for HMRC purposes etc.
This I think is received 6 months or so before the persons birthday.
However as far as notice to leave goes that depends on her contact. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
