USB won't fit in any laptop USB ports!

From the picture it looks like an eSATA plug. Probably the one port on the laptop that it goes into is an eSATA/USB hybrid port0

I have a Seagate Backup Plus and confirm what you say - the "B" end from the picture fits into the drive itself, and the other end fits into the regular USB ports on my laptop.I assume the "B" plug fits into the external hard drive, and the other plug is the one for the laptop. This is a USB3 plug because of the blue baffle, as you know. That should fit into a USB2 socket or a USB3 socket.
I'm tempted to think that somehow the plug is malformed, although sometimes you have to put more effort into plugging a USB plug into a USB socket than you might wish to exert.
I can only suggest getting another special cable, but that will take several days...

That is exactly right.
And a Sata plug will only fit in one socket on my VAIO loptop - the hybrid Sata/Usb socket.
The IdeaPad Y510p Laptop has no suitable socket.

Maybe OP needs the USB adaptor for the GoFlex range - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-STAE104-FreeAgent-GoFlex-Upgrade/dp/B003IT6PHM0

The eSata plug is at the "drive" end of the cable, not the laptop end. My Seagate Backup Plus just needs a regular USB plug at the laptop end.That is exactly right.

Just an update (and thank you for all of the replies.
)
My new cable arrived today and it fits in a normal USB port of my laptop and works perfectly.
Phew.
