1998 Toyota Landcruiser 3.0 diesel

Two weeks ago had trouble starting it but once started it run great, was drawing in air into the fuel line from a perished line which has now been replaced. Car now starts ok. Used it twice for short runs but then a new (unrelated??) problem has arose.
Car runs for a mile or so then acts like its running on kangaroo juice and bellows black smoke out of the exhaust, stop for ten minutes and it starts up again and the repeat happens. Garage has had it for a few days and they have tried blanking the EGR valve to no avail and now they have given up and I'm towing it back tomorrow.

Apart from whipping out the injectors I'm clean out of ideas, anyone have any suggestions?

Could be obstruction in the air inlet system, check all your hoses for closing up under load. Freelanders suffer from inter cooler hoses letting air out which results in insufficient air entering the engine, not sure what type of intake system your engine has.

Further to nickcc's comment, the suction side hoses tend to delaminate internally, and collapse inwards, looking perfect from the outside.

Also, if it is intercooled, the intercooler may be blocked with oily deposits, you can remove it and wash it out.

You can buy £1,000,000 a can "proper" cleaner, or use whatever you think will dissolve oil. Make sure that the intercooler is fully dried out before you put it back, or the engine will run on whatever it can breathe from the intercooler, and may well overspeed and break.

Blocked fuel filter would cause starvation not overfuelling.

Tank was removed and cleaned out and fuel lines were blown through to ensure no blockages, fuel filter was replaced also. All that was done two weeks ago when it looked like it was drawing air.

Awww spoiled my vision of a Nissan front end and Landcruiser back end.

Although if you took the badges off and asked 100 people what it was i bet most would get it wrong.

Been playing with it earlier and it looks like all the pipes and hoses are ok, the maf sensor is ok so I've come to the conclusion that it may be the turbo not working. Thanks for aL the replys so far.
