Available allotments

One of the hardest things to find these days are plots on allotments. Most have long waiting lists. It might not be a bad idea to have a sticky, whereby allotments that have available plots could let readers know.

Anybody in the Dartford (Kent) area that wants a plot on a very beautiful and secure site could do worse than get in touch with us! We have a handful of 10-rod (225 square metre) plots up for grabs at £25.00 annual rent (which includes free water, manure and woodchip), plus modern toilets, a thriving social calendar, apiary and dedicated wildlife areas that are professionally looked after!

They must live in the wrong area. Lots of empty plots on various sites around the West Midlands also.

I was surprised how many sites there were in my local area. And how few of them are actually advertised. Some appear to be kept a secret and only known by word of mouth.

I have read that some sites charge up to £100 for a full plot which in my view is extortionate and no wonder that there are vacancies. My council owned site charge me £15 for a full plot as I am over 60 years old, I had to wait 10 months on the waiting list, we have water on site, a skip two or three times a year, regular delivery of bark chippings and have just had a road repaired. I do expect the rent to increase this year but I will be very disappointed if it goes up by more than a fiver.

Mine's about £43 a year as the council consider it to not be a full plot (actually its quite a bit more).

We have water. And burdocks. Lots of burdocks!

I think if allotments were self-financing, it would cost more like £120 for a full plot.

• My full plot (10 rods) in SE London is £100 and that is only because we are self managed it would be twice that if we were council managed  We do have skips a couple of times a year, manure deliveries, wood chip, a shop and toilet facilities. Oh to be closer to Dartford, I could have 4 plots for the price of one :D

AllotmentsParts of the orchard have been set aside for small allotment plots for gardeners who live in Madeley, Woodside or Cuckoo Oak. Anybody who is interested should contact info@madeleytowncouncil.gov.uk who will put you in touch with Pam Marshall, the Chair. Currently the plots are available free of charge provided that only environmentally friendly gardening techniques are used.

Sound like I need to move to Kent - my council has no allotments so have to travel a bit to my nearest private one. £140 a year for 100 square metres although they do provide a free shed! There is quite a large number of empty plots so hope that encourages a price reduction. Extortionate but still worth it to get my regular growing fix in company of like minded souls!

Would love to live somewhere with decent close allotments and defo on my list of wants or next house move.

I consider an allotment to be a great asset to the community and a boon to the wellbeing of the population for anyone who is fortunate to have one, but the cost of some plots seem to me to be extortionate and will price many people out of being able to afford one, which in my view is a pity and shortsighted by the powers that be.
• I am in the process of taking a plot at the Coldharbour allotments in Greenwich. The available allotments are:
• Coldharbour
• Crathie Road West
• Middle Park
• Parkview.
