Target email re security breach

Options
This may be of some assistance to anyone else who has received an email about a security breach from Target.com. - a US company. I have already checked it out and the email is genuine. I'm not sure of the best place to post this, so please move it to somewhere more appropriate if possible.

Part of the email read: "Target learned in mid-December that criminals forced their way into our systems and took guest information, including debit and credit card data. Late last week, as part of our ongoing investigation, we learned that additional information, including name, mailing address, phone number or email address, was also taken. I am writing to make you aware that your name, mailing address, phone number or email address may have been taken during the intrusion."

According to Fox News "The stolen data includes customer names, credit and debit card numbers, card expiration dates and the three-digit security codes located on the backs of cards." Cue considerable concern . So I phoned Target.

What the email does not make clear is that the only breaches were of cards physically swiped between November 27th and December 15th 2013, not online purchases and not in-store purchases at other times.

So, anyone else who has received or receives this email, unless you were in the US and shopped in one of the Target stores between the above dates, the security breach does not affect you. According to Target, they have sent the email out to every address they have on file.
. . .I did not speak out

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me..

If it is only cards which were physically swiped, how would they have the CVV? Seems either Fox got it wrong or you were misinformed during your phone call to Target.

Good point. However, I looked into it a bit more than I've posted to make sure I couldn't have been involved - just wanted to reassure anyone else who received the email. I think the security code only applied to people who have Target's own credit card.
