Help Laptop/Hardware issue

Not sure if I have any comeback on this one - bought a DELL inspiron laptop from ASDA just under 18 months back and have used it only for basic web browsing.

Laptop simply stopped working a couple of days back and computer shop I took it to stated the hard drive has collapsed and the drivers are missing thus I would basically need to put new hardware in.

After under 18 months do I have a case that the laptop should have lasted longer or am I clutching at straws??

The above was the original post I put in consumer rights but have been advised to put something on here............

Loaded laptop the other night and it wouldnt connect to internet, contacted Virgin (net provider) as thought it was connection issue...........they checked and stated windows drivers were no longer on system, tried reloading them and it wouldnt work, tried restoring to an earlier restore point via system restore wouldnt work so took off AVG protection and tried again but still failed.

Then took it to a computer shop and when guy opened it error message came up (sadly dont know what as I was rushing it in on my work lunch) guy stated hard drive was collapsing and would need replacing..........he tried to upload drivers but failed and basically said it was gubbed!

A) Is it fixable or worth fixing instead of purchasing a new one!
B) Do I have any comeback on a laptop that basically failed after 17 months (sadly checked and warranty ran out 26/06/13)

If not do you guys have any advice on a new laptop - just use it for browsing the net, watching a bit of sport.....something reliable! Looking in budget range of £250 - £350

hard drive collapsed and drivers missing makes no sense.

if the hard drive is working, factory restore it, after backing up and try avast free instead of avg.

if the hard drive is really faulty, a new one is around £45 which is far cheaper than a new machine

run chkdsk c: /F and try safe mode with networking

most problems like this are software related, which a factory restore cures, if it is really a dying hard disk, then you could try soga route if you have the patience, or just spend 45 on a new one.
