High Greek Medical Bills

I went on a girls holiday to kavos in july 2013, whilst there I ended up having an accident and standing on broken grass resulting in being taken to Corfu Medical Centre, whilst there I had my wound cleaned out and stitched up under local aesthetic, I had been told to come back in the morning with passport etc to pay the fee of 120 euro to be seen and dealt with and to get my wounds changed and to get medication. I went back the next day, signed the forms needed, paid the 120 and then paid for the medication. I checked with the English receptionist that this was all I had to pay and was told yes, that's it unless I have any other problem and was sent on my way.

Now 6 1/2 months later I have received two bills from debt collectors saying for one of the letters which is for the wound on my foot that they are wanting another 350£ and the other letter is for a upper respiratory infection which I did not have and said that I had surgery to fix this and that letter is wanting 140£ and even weirdly has what looks to me by signature on it. When I know that I only signed one lot of each paperwork which stated on it that it was for my foot, now it has been produced a second time.

Is there anything I can do? I did have insurance with AXA but has it been too long to claim?

HELP! im a student, I don't have a spare £500!!

Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.
  • Thanks for pointing Sara to my post Moto2. She's at Swansea Uni and I'm sat at home in Rotherham and our wires got crossed.

Sounds like a scam. Ignore it and see what happens.

As above, I also think this may be a scam. I had an accident in Athens and was seen by 3 doctors and a neurosurgeon. I paid less than 15 Euros for 3 head and neck X Rays at the local hospital.
  • The debt-collection agency cannot force you to pay the money.
The only thing they can do is take you to court. But for them to win at court they would have to show you agreed to the charges, or that you were made aware of them. Which you weren't.
Also I think it is very unlikely the clinic in Greece or wherever would go to the trouble of issuing court proceedings against you in the UK.

If the debt were genuine then I think it probable that the clinic or agent would indeed issue proceedings.

In this case there seem to be so many dubious things about the bills that I doubt whether they would bother and I am confident that any court in Europe would throw out their claim. However, I do suggest that you pass on the bills to your insurance firm, along with the explanation that you typed in the OP, and let them deal with things.
