Bought a car with no cat!

Totally agree, but de-cat it and well, have a look on you tube.0

Exactly, past it myself now too, but i still appreciate and nicely tuned car0

No it won't but it didn't surprise me that the MOT test at VW would result in a costly failure (or so they report to the customer) . An R32 is quick enough without needing to remove the cat, especially if the car is not modded in any other way, I suspect the car is fine.
The car is not fine, even if it passed the emissions test , it would still fail an MOT test. Section 7.1 of the MOT testers manual, rejection reason 3.
If a cat is missing from a system that was originally fitted with one, it is an automatic fail.0 -

Yes I am aware, and perhaps the non optimists are in denial.
You get a new car and take it in for teething problems, they can't find anything, as soon as it's out of warranty, they find everything wrong with the car and in moments, I remember my MK5 Golf had excessive wind noise , took it in 3 times they said they couldn't find a problem, then when washing the car, I realised the rear quarter glass was not bonded securly, after the warranty they said the bushes had gone and the radiator was leaking badly, yet the car was not losing coolant and the car flew through all of the MOT's and only one where one of the number plate lights had failed.
If the OP had purchased from VW and they do all these checks before the car reaches the forecourt, then I'm surprised it was not picked up that the catalytic converter was missing.0 -

This will apply to diesels too - starting in February this year.
A missing DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) will be an automatic fail, irrespective of the car passing the smoke test.0 -
In the case of a DPF, the most common method of removing them is to cut-off the cover on the top, remove the innards & re-fit the cover. Thus, the MOT inspector will look at the system & note that the DPF is in place.Never Knowingly Understood.

was the engine / emissions light on when you purchased it?
I know when I had my S2000 decatted, even with a decat pipe fitted which was supposed to knock the engine light off, it stayed on all the time.0 -

There is a used car trader near me that sells used cars with new 12 month MOTs on if they pass. If they don't pass he just sells them with whatever remaining MOT is left on.
I know not to touch those cars as I know there is an expensive bill looming.0 -
