EON Gas Bill - New thread

Hello, I had moved out of bottom flat to middle flat of the same owner in the same building on June 30th 2013. In the bottom flat my energy supplier was eon but in middle flat it is British gas. As it was rented flat, the landlord of the flat was supposed to ring and inform eon about my moving out. However he didnt neither has he given me any tenancy closure letter. Now Eon is asking me to pay for gas bill from July-Nov 2013. I had clearly informed eon in Oct 2013 that I have moved out of the flat. However they want evidence of my moving out. I have been trying to contact my landlord but to no avail. Please advise what evidence can I provide to eon? I can provide my council tax bills, new property contract. I dont want to mess up with my credit history. Thanks

  • It's not down to the landlord to tell them you were moving out originally - it's down to you. The landlord has nothing to do with your energy contract.

However, he should be able to provide notification of the end of tenancy. I suggest you tell him that you need it to avoid paying 5 months worth of gas, and if he doesn't provide it you'll withhold rent payment equal to the gas bill.

As already posted, it was your responsibility as the Account Holder to advise Eon of your move, and also give them the meter readings on the day you moved out.

Though the landlord has not yet done a proper closure on your old lease, I assume that he has issued you with a new lease that shows the Start Date of that lease, and Eon need to see a copy of that document and C/Tax bill to accept that you have moved

What is bit of a worry is that if your old flat has been re-let to another tenant, then that tenant should have advised Eon of their occupation and the meter reading as soon as they moved in - If they had done this you would not have a problem, but it seems they have not done so - Did you advise BG of your occupancy and meter readings on the day you moved ?

    Hi online_123

As Birdman and dogshome say, it's up to the account holder to tell us when responsibility for a property changes.

Don't worry, though. If you let us have documents to verify the change, we'll close the account based on this information.

A Tenancy Agreement or Council Tax document is usually ok.

Meter readings for the day in question would be good but, if you don't have these, we'll base our final bill on estimates.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Lopa

Just to let you know, I've received the email you sent through with the documents attached. I've forwarded this to a colleague in a specialist department and asked them to sort this out for you.

    Thanks.
