I'm looking for a good PDF editor to do some translation work that doesn't cost the earth although know i will have to shell out to get something that does what I want and doesn't watermark everything. Any recommendations?

Why are you trying to edit a PDF?
Generally, PDF is meant as a display or form only format and there should always be the same document in another format for if you want to edit it. Even the formal Adobe tools are fairly limited in their ability to edit PDFs as it isnt the intent of the format0 -
I don't have the original document unfortunately and need to edit some fields to add in room for translated text, to then send on to a client who needs it for a handout of a presentation.
I looked at NitroPDF but have used them before and wasn't impressed, possibly because it didn't run well on my PCSaving for a return trip to America, 3 weeks on Route 66 for our honeymoon just wasn't long enough!0 -
Serif Page Plus will allow editing of PDF's:
"Save PDFs and edit them too
Share documents and designs with anyone in print and online with flexible PDF export. Save as a smaller file size for the web or at the highest quality for the best print results. You can even fully edit PDFs just like you would any other document which is a unique feature for a desktop publisher.
Reorder pages, edit and replace images and even merge PDFs – all in PagePlus X7! You can also tweak or rewrite text and customise graphics with different colours, there’s nothing you can’t do!"

Have also used Infix before, from https://www.iceni.com - anyone else used this, is it worth buying the full version?Saving for a return trip to America, 3 weeks on Route 66 for our honeymoon just wasn't long enough!0

Another option is to convert it back out to MS-Word or something like it, edit the Word document, then convert back to PDF. I have used a (free) site called zamzar.com, you upload the PDF file and select what format you want it to be in.
Only problem I've had is that it tries very hard to bring out graphics, tables and so on and that can lead to some quite complicated MS-Word or HTML outputs, but the style of document dictates whether that matters or not. There is a size limit, above a certain document size (100Mb, I think) you have to pay for the service. Also I presume you won't have any copyright issues in 'reverse engineering' the PDF file, though that's not my business.0 -

Thank you. No, no Copyright issues - doc was made by me on a now defunct laptop and silly me, not backed up - just can't face the time cost of rewriting it for the addition of a few lines
Thanks for this - i will have a look, i admit i hadn't looked for a "closer to home" solution lolSaving for a return trip to America, 3 weeks on Route 66 for our honeymoon just wasn't long enough!0 -
You can use open office and install a free PDF plugin which I think will let you edit the PDF as if it was a document.0

I've not found OpenOffice or LibreOffice that good at reading PDFs. Frequently I've spent more time sorting the formatting than I would have done retyping the whole thing from scratch.
You've probably sorted this by now but in case you haven't Serif are selling off the previous version of PagePlus (X6) which will open PDFs and make them editable. Cost = £9.95 delivered if ordered before 5pm on Thursday 10th April 2014.
Call 0800 376 4828 and quote code PPNX6q100.
The full manual is available for download from their site. As a PDF. :-)
Be aware that Serif products are excellent but the sales people can be a pain in the derrière trying to sell you something else. Be polite but firm and definitely tell them you don't want to be called in future.
And, no, I don't work for Serif but I am a fan of their products.0
