EDF monthly payment more than actual use

Has anyone just got a message from EDF that your monthly DD is going up. Have just got a bill that is changing from £67 to £97 a month on the BluePlus Price promise march 2015.

Even if I calculate the payments according to what their usage forecast is, it shouldn't be that much. I am being charged nearer £20 a month more than I should actually pay to cover next years bill.

Hi BirdInCamera and welcome to the forum.

You are entitled to an explanation of how they arrived at your DD amount. Ask them; they are obliged to provide that information.

Hi BirdInCamera and welcome to the forum.

..And I,for one, will be suitably amazed ,if they come up with anything which makes any sense whatsoever!!:rotfl:
  • It does seem that EDF have changed the information and calculations they are giving out:
My last bill said that they were changing the DD amount.
The same page gave two bits of info; the first
    Bill date: 11 Dec 2013

    Annual billing period: 9 Oct 2013 - 8 Oct 2014

Choose the best tariff for you
There could be other tariffs better suited to
you. Visit edfenergy.com or call us on
    0800 096 9000 to find out what's available
right now, and for help choosing the best
    deal for you.

    Your payments and projection
We think you'll use £1,428.31 by the end of
    your annual billing period.
    So far you've paid
    £284.00
    That means you
    need to pay
    £1,144.31 by the end
    of your annual
    billing period.

and a second box (all on the first page)
We are changing your monthly payment to £114.00

    Why?
To calculate your Direct Debit payments, we set an annual billing
period and spread your payments evenly over the year. Your
    annual billing period runs from 9 Oct 13 - 8 Oct 14.
Based on your latest meter readings and our current prices, we
now predict your cost for this annual billing period will be
£1,428.31, and your current monthly payment of £142.00 will be
too much to cover your balance.
Since you've already paid £284.00 during this annual billing period,
you have 10 months to pay the remaining £1,144.31. We're
changing your Direct Debit amount to £114.00, starting on 4 Jan 14
to help avoid any build-up of credit by the end of your billing
    period.

Page 2 of the bill gave a cost prediction for the next 12 months based on actual energy usage previously.

Is this a widespread change from EDF following the DD problems widely reported on this Forum? It seems to me that they are giving all the info needed to agree or otherwise the changes they are notifying

They just put my DD down by £12 - I need to tell them to put it back up again!

I think the big six have had a bit of a finger-wagging meeting with the energy minister recently. They can see how banking intransigence is creating pressure to break them up. Perhaps the energy suppliers can see some writing on the wall.

Ive been with EDF now for three years... practically ever time I do a meter reading they send a message telling me my direct debit is changing. I've got used to this and just look to see what they are changing it to...then email them and tell them what figure I want it set at.
I did a meter reading a week ago...and got the normal we are changing your direct debit message.... when I saw the change I couldn't believe it.... despite ending the last quarter £50 in credit...they wanted to change my DD from 185 per month to 350!

I emailed them and said no way... I want it to stay as it is...and they emailed me back saying it would stay at 350.

I got back onto them and asked them how they arrived at those figures... the last quarter is one of the two colder quarters of the year and I ended it in credit....so how do they estimate that in the next four months I will use over double the amount of gas/electric.... total rubbish!

Anyway to cut a long story short they changed it back to the original amount.

Why do I have to go through this everytime... its clear to me that EDF want me...and all there other customers to be hundreds of pounds in credit...money which resides in there huge pot of cash making them even more cash!

Even when they changed the amount of the direct debit back it was sent with an email which had a very threatening tone.... stating they had changed the amount but I would end up owing them money and they would claim it back within 7 days!

These scare tactics don't work on me...im perfectly capable of working out (roughly) how much Im spending and keeping an overall 0 or small credit balance.

I feel sorry for the elderly or vunerable who maybe worried by these sort of tactics... I'm seriously thinking of complain to Offgen!
