Yorkshire East Coast Whitby or Filey?

Hi
just wanted some advice please
Looking to go to East Coast of Yorkshire sometime in August this year as we have seen a lot of the UK but not been to this part of Yorkshire.
There will be 5 adults and 3 children, age ranges from mid sixties down to 8!
We would all like to stay in same accommodation so we can share care of the kids, cooking etc so are looking for at least 4 bedrooms but the trouble is we have been to a few holiday parks over the years and really not enjoyed them. We are quite a quiet family and like to spend time on the beach, playing games together etc, the kids like activities like Archery, horse riding etc and also love swimming.
We would like to be somewhere near the beach but also near to some nice pubs or places to eat out. We will probably go for a day trip to York whilst we are there.
As a guide Blackpool is my idea of hell!! (sorry I know loads of people love it and I don't want to be offensive- just don't want to end up anywhere like it!)

  • We love Filey and go there a lot , only live about an hour and a half away. Last year we stayed at The Bay, a lovely resort about a mile out of Filey. There were 6 adults and 2 children. Lots to do in Filey and Scarborough, Flamborough Head etc. If the weather is poor the Bay has an indoor pool and activities like zorbing, archery etc.
However we've also had some lovely stays in holiday cottages and done our own thing. Have fun.
PS our party ranged from a 7 year old through to lovely 81 year old Grandad !

  • Thanks to both of you, looked at the cottage in the last post and it looks just what we would love but fully booked :(- Never mind
JollyMummy you must be psychic, we have been looking at the Bay, looks right up our street but a little worried about the reports of building work going on, think I will check that out and if it's not a huge problem will book there. Did you book through Hoseasons or direct with an owner? Thanks again!
    p.s your Grandad sounds fab!

Whitby's lovely, we stay there a lot, but it's an old fishing port with steep inclines and most of the houses have no parking so it may be better to stay elsewhere and perhaps have a day trip there.

We book via this company who specialise in Yorkshire - I recommend them for their customer service

It's actually my little boys Grandad (my father in law) and he is a total love :)
My sister in law booked direct from the owner, through the Bay website, I would check whereabouts on resort it is, to avoid sections that still might have building work going on.
We've also booked some nice cottages in Filey through English Country Cottages.

  • Thanks everyone, we have booked 12greenclose at the bay Filey through the owners website, no building work as that part already completed so we are really pleased to have found somewhere that looks quiet but still has things for the kids to do and is near the beach, perfect for us!
I am surprised though at how many holidays places are already booked and getting booked for August, we have had to change our initial date to a week later. So if anyone looking at this for advice and holidaying in the UK I would book sooner rather than later!

I'd second your advice, but am not surprised - in my experience, once people find a place they like, they will tend to book up the same place for the next year as soon as they return from holiday.
