Incorrect default registered Aktiv Capital

Checked my Equifax report and found a default registered by Aktiv Capital for £3090. After looking at it further this refers to what I believe to be a Barclaycard that I had when I was a student in 2004. No payments have been made since 2005 at latest. They contacted me several years ago and I sent them the 'statute barred' letter. I haven't heard anything from them since.
Despite this, and no payments being made Aktiv have registered this as a default, stating that I defaulted in Dec 2011! How can I get it removed?

Any help or advice gratefully received.

Do you have any idea what the original default date was? If you do it might be worth quoting, but its likely it would be within around 6 months of the last payment if not less.

However its not unheard of for debt collectors to make up newer default dates, often the date they took over the account.

I would start by complaining to the credit ref agencies, but they often just refer you back to the debt collector.

Sometimes its a case of writing to the various bodies until they agree to remove it. If you get to a brick wall you can do a complaint to the ICO who can force the removal.
