Potential redundancy/new contract?!

Hi all
I don't have much info as it's my boyfriends brother who has the issue and they only found out today.
Basically, everyone at his firm has been put on notice that there may be redundancies.
There are new contracts that will need to be signed, and they will all only be working 3 days a week under the new contract.
If they don't sign the contract, they will be made redundant.
If they do sign the contract and then get laid off anyway, they won't get redundancy pay because it's a new contract and technically they don't have a past history of working with the new contract.
Now, I'm pretty sure that this is all either illegal, or a very good way of getting around the laws.
What should I tell them to do? Is it going to be best for them to speak to someone at CAB? Or just let them go ahead with it then sue them for unlawful dismissal?
I have to add that he has dyspraxia and can't just walk into any other job.
Thanks

Redundancy is based on continuity of service(full years) not length of contract.
What will happen is it will be on 3 days pay not what they were working if it takes them below the redundancy cap(£450PW).
Also it will probably effect their holidays.
They need to ALL refuse to sign and get legal advice.
How many are involved?0 -
I'm not sure... it's a factory so I imagine lots. The trouble is, some of them will probably sign just to ensure they have a shot at keeping their job.
Thanks for the reply. I will pass the info on.0
