I've had two dogs with MVD (mitral valve disease) who were given Fortekor. It does take a while to take effect.
  • I'm so happy to hear that the little one is recovering well! And I'm glad that he didn't need the steroid injection, that stuff comes with it's own side effects that you really don't wanna deal with :/ . You are so very lucky, honestly, you dodged a bullet. My cat never recovered.

Regarding the meds, are you buying it all from your vet? I found that I could get the meds at least 2-3 times cheaper online from viovet, even with the price of the vet prescription factored in from, and I can't recommend them enough. They have excellent customer service.

How is the little one doing now?

    Hi Goldust

He's walking much more easily now and even managed to jump onto the sofa last night, the first time since this happened on Wednesday.

He's a little subdued today and not wanting to try and jump at all. His tummy is off a little, I can tell as all he wants to do is set grass and drink water. It's hardly surprising though he's been having so many meds through his system, last nigh he had Metacam, felimazole and fortekor. Not going to give him anything tonight and if his tummy settles I'll just start with his felimazole in the morning and leave off his Metacam until Monday, his tummy gets upset quickly with the Metacam.

I used to get all my meds online when his brother was alive, we were always playing around with his thyroid meds and it was cheaper that way. At the moment I've been getting them through the vet as we've been tweaking my remaining boys's medication.

Will have to see if things settle down and if they do I might consider a prescription again. Many thanks for asking how he's getting on.

    Hi Gold dust

He's not too bad, haven't had another episode of the leg weakness since the original episode. He's started tentively jumping again, into the bath to drink water nod yesterday scaled the neighbours fence. Think his pain is always going to be a bit hit and miss as I can only dose him every other day a tiny amount of Metacam. Today he's slightly off his food but I'm putting it down to his activity yesterday. He had another episode of constipation at the beginning of the week and not wanting a major problem to develop like last time, I spoke to the vet and we've started him on Katalax too, sure he must be rattling with everything he now has. It's difficult trying to tell if he's unwell of not, the vet thinks it's mainly due pain and muscle waste age given that all his other tests were okay.

It's good to read that he's feeling better.
  • Lovely to hear that he's jumping around again! Poor little man is on a cocktail of drugs. One of my cats had muscle wastage and kidney failure, he was so skinny that the bones above his tail were jutting out. Contrary to what the vet advised, we put him on a high protein diet (raw) in conjunction with fortekor and a phosphorus binder and his kidney values settled down greatly, and the vet was surprised at how much weight he'd put back on in such a short amount of time. We didn't just pick this idea out of thin air, we followed the advice of a controversial vet (Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins) as her tight regulation protocol got out other cat off of insulin, so we gave it a go. You can google her book if you want to read up a bit - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/0312358024 .

You may not want to try and rock the boat at this stage of your cat's life (which is sensible, I'm not sure that I would if I was in your position) but I just thought that I'd mention it. I hope he continues to go from strength to strength. :)

We had this a month ago exactly as you explained with Tinker 12, back end down when walking, couldn't touch her back end without her growling at me, this is the 1 warning you get lol, do it again and its attack time. Saw the vet, antibiotics for a week, supplements and within a week she was absolutely fine. The vet said at first it could be arthritis but it came on so suddenly. She decied in the end when Tink jumped up on to the chair, then onto the table then over ot the bench that she must have had some sort of trauma to her back end although she ruled out being hit by a car or something. Something happened in between us going out at 11 and being back at 12, we will never know what. Glad yours is doing well.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
