Application Blocked By Security Settings

I'm running a web page application which runs a Java Applet. Sometimes in the past, Java has asked me to confirm authorisation. However, now I get an Application Blocked By Security Settings box with the message "Your security settings have blocked a self-signed application from running".
A search suggests that the cause is an out-of-date version of Java, but I've installed the latest version & restarted my laptop.
Anyone any suggestions?
