Debit card declined even though money in a/c

Last night, I tried to pay for some shopping in my local Co-op shop with my Santander 123 debit card but it was declined. I said there was enough money in a/c. When I got home, my husband said to check the available balance so I gave him the card to check atm. The available balance was £8.##. The shopping was £4.94. Why would the payment be declined? Time was approx 9.50pm when card was declined. I need debit card to pay bills online & for shopping.

what have santander said about it?
  • Best thing is to speak to the bank/card issuer. The retailer isn't told why the card is declined for data protection reasons. Could be all sorts of reasons, speak to the bank.

    Pending transaction perhaps?
  • This way madness lies. My Lloyds debit card was declined in Morrisons - Morrisons told me the decision lay with Lloyds and was nothing to do with them, Lloyds told me the decision lay with Morrisons, and was nothing to do with them. Luckily I had another card with me.

Another time, my husband's card was refused but mine (on the same account) was accepted. Bizarre.

It's frustrating, and embarrassing, but sometimes it just happens.

I've on some occasions had my card decline and it work on a second attempt. Sometimes the card networks have some blips (Visa and Amex more likely as they have endpoint networks).
