It sounds like the deal is done as far as the insurance is concerned - its the third party insurers and they will be giving you the car, having deducted its salvage value from the wrote off valuation.

Take care that the garage where it has been will not start charging you a hefty daily fee for storage.

Do not have a crash repairer pick up your car to asses it. Do you think it will be a cheap price he will produce, or do you think it will be so expensive that you will give it to him for a song, especially when he tells you he doesn't have a truck heading back your way and if you want it back it will be £x00's?
What is the car, model and age?

The chassis may need to be rejigged. Some parts are designed to crumple on impact. It maybe more costly than you think.

Sticking a new bumper or wing on to hide the real damage is not ideal. The car may crumple badly if you had an accident.

  • Thanks for the advice. Seems there are lots of new things to worry about by trying to save money on putting my car back on the road. Also a lot of time and faffing around involved.

I think that this is a job for someone who knows what they are doing, and I shall just see what can be arranged with the garage now looking after the car. Apparently the manufacturer has a scheme where they can reduce costs of materials in a case such as mine. If the figures work out, I shall go for it. Not sure if the insurer will be able to reclassify the damage as other than a total loss or if they have already informed DVLC.

In some ways the easy thing to do is to use the money to buy a another car - but looking around I can't see anything like mine for the money I shall get.

I might not be fulling grasping this, but have you actually bought the car back from the insurance company? Otherwise they own the car now not you. (or am I missing something???)

Quite possible that I am not grasping things myself, but I thought the car was mine till I agreed that the insurance company could have it...

My information is from an accident management company and they are dealing with the third party insurer rather than with my insurance company (as I was not at fault for the crash). They have indicated a salvage value for the car, and have authorised a cheque for the value of my car less the salvage value - so I think it is still mine until they provide me with funds for the salvage value.

You still haven't answered the question regarding make/model of the car.
If the chassis is undamaged, then you could replace the front grill yourself easily enough. Same with front bumper.

If you accept te payout the car now belongs to them. Unless they have told you to dispose of it or keep it.

If you want it you need to buy it off them.

Reading your replies to some of the posts i did wonder if you were thinking they were going to give you more money to scrap it.

The opposite. If you want it you need to buy it or arrange the price in the payout.
Have you cashed the cheque yet?

If you want it you need to buy it off them.....

Why? OP is not claiming off his own insurer.

His settlement includes him keeping the car.
