could someone please help me to work out how much some shares are worth? my sil is debating on whether or not to get some cosmetic surgery done which is going to cost ball park figure of 16,000. she is trying to free up some money she has in various places one of which being shares. neither of us know whether it is necessarily a good time to sell or bad. at the moment we cant even figure out what they are worth. searched on net but wasn't very clear, I tried to just ask how much are shares worth in BG and it came up with 1,347.00p each and am fairly certain this is not what they are each worth so was wondering if after hour of searching and not getting far some one would be kind enough to work it out for us. she has;

388 shares in centrica
138 shares in national grid
212 BG

thank you so much

    388 shares in centrica @ 321p each = £1,246
    138 shares in national grid @782p each = £1,079
    212 BG @ 1341p each = £2,843

    £5,168 in total.

Would you mind showing how you got to those figures? I'm not questioning them, but it might be helpful to show how one would do the searching. I'm fairly new to shares but guess you could go to Google Finance and enter the companies there.

Type the company name in to "Search company or market".

There are numerous other sites that will support this information.

The best way would be to go to Google Finance or Yahoo Finance to create a portfolio of the shares you own. This will allow you to track their value on a daily basis. Both have their strengths and weaknesses so try both and pick the one you prefer.

Other sites have portfolio tools but they can be a little too complex for the novice.

most newspapers will have these share prices in every day
  • Just a quick note if you're a shares newbie (like me...!). When you see a price for shares there is often a bid price, an offer price and a mid price quoted. The bid is the one you can expect to sell at (the lower value) and the offer the one you could expect to buy at (the higher value). Sometimes there can be quite a gap between the two (the spread), which means you can be very disappointed if you think you will be able to sell at the higher price.

Apologies if this seems very basic to anyone, but I didn't realise this first time around!

You can see performance on these 3 shares for the last year here ...

Centrica's price is 5% down on a year ago, and down 20% on 4 months ago. BG and NG have both risen substantially. Centrica may well not improve unless and until Labour lose the next general election, given their threat to interfere in the energy markets.

So IMHO, a good time to sell BG and NG. Centrica is a gamble. But if she bought them more than two years ago, your SIL may still be making a profit.

Personally, I'm holding Centrica for the long term. The dividend is currently more than 5% net for basic rate tax payers.

I googled company name "share price" or any of the other helpful links posted by other users here.

One I mainly tend to use is www.digitallook.com

DigitalLook.com provides market data to quite a few other financial information/research websites too.
