Neighbour noise (but not noisy neighbours)

I think that today's children are more heavy footed than my generation. my boys clump around like the proverbial herd of elephants. So do their friends
I can run up our stairs and they won't hear me (if I want to catch them at something they shouldn't be doing) or I'll clump up the stairs to prove a point or I want them to know I'm coming upstairs to catch them!just in case you need to know:

I live in a 1880s Victorian mid terrace. On one side I can normally hear the neighbour's kids running up the stairs and getting scolded by their mum. I can also hear the other neighbour (music student) practicing her singing. Nothing that annoys us.0

I lived in a mid terrace for 20 years, then got a detached. It's fantastic not to worry about noise, and also you can wind up music etc.0

I live in a mid back to back terrace. Both sides are private rented. One side is quiet apart from very very loud (and fake) lovemaking. Screaming and slapping noises the whole works. Asked them to be quiet as their room is next to my daughters, they ignored me and carried on. I reported them to environmental health and its stopped.
I do hear general noise like doors in the kitchen being slammed and noise on the stairs. If I could afford to I would buy a detached but finances dictate a terrace. Oh and I dont find its warmer at all although as the its a back to back when its freezing you dont get as much frostyness.I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round0 -
I do feel for you. There are huge differences between different properties as to the amount of noise you hear.
I lived in 1900 terrace - could hear a lot from both sides
- another 1900 terrace (almost identical property) - rarely heard anything (and it did seem to be to do with the house, not the neighbours, one set of neighbours were quite loud, but it was only noticable in summer when we all had windows open, the sound didn't seem to travel much through the walls)
- a 1970's terrace - can hear quite a lot; TV, raised voices, washing machine, alarm clock.
I am shortly (all being well) going to move to a semi-detached where the main bedroom is *not* adjoining the shared wall, and am hoping that that, and the fact that it is a 1950 ex-council property and fairly solidly built, will mean that there is much less noise.
My parents had a late-70's detached house on a housing estate when we were small - apparently they got a fair amount of noise from ext door which was due to the 2 houses being on he same concrete (?) base so sound travelled that way.
It is something which is very, very hard to know ahead of time, but visiting in the evening may help. All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -

This is hilarious :rotfl:. Why don't they make love in crash helmets like President Hollande? Much quieter.Mornië utulië0
