"Future Opportunities"

I have just read the post below by WadeWade and it piqued my interest. Can anyone please explain to me the concept that he is talking about? I am assuming it is to do with investing small amounts in several accounts across different companies in the hope that there will be a wind fall paid by the company to its customers at some future point. Is this correct?
Like many people I put £100 into a few building societies like the Portman and still have these many years later. Is £100 still enough to qualify for future opportunities or should I be looking to increase my holdings to allow for inflation?

Thanks in advance!

The principle is to put 100 in mutual building societies in the hope that they will merge, be taken over or will demutualise (i.e. become PLCs).
Usually there is a payout to 'members' who have at least a 100 in a saving account.
Often, to discourage people opening a/c solely for this reason there are clauses saying you will not benefit if the event takes place in the first five years or so.

    I find this very interesting.

So, what are the most popular organisations to do this with and had anyone here benefitted from this in the past and by how much?
