Contact your local council and your MP and ask them the question
and don't be fobbed off .. you are paying for the services they provide
Also are you talking about HA,s or Social Housing for the other vans you have seen?
Many of these now work until 8pm0 -
Good grief.
Council workers don't get much! Making them drive to and from a yard each night is utterly pointless, and will use fuel to do so!0 -
None of us get much.pointless how can making the drive to work and saving tax payers money be pointless tel that to the peeople who are or have lost their jobs in councils0
-
Dont know what dept the vans i have seen are from must be parked in their homes cos they are there every night0
-
Our Engineers that travel have a van that is now fitted with a tracker.
The van is not anything but a work vehicle.
I doubt the council can save much money in this area as most fleet managers will be using trackers now..Even if just to reduce insurance premiums.0 -

On the way home i counted 24 council vans parked up in drives and on roads the council yard is 1/2 a mile from my place of work
...............
Just because you do not know why they have the vans at home you assume that its wrong for them to do it.
They could be on call. How much would it cost for someone to get a taxi in the middle of the night to go to the yard to collect the vehicle when needed? And they to get one to return home?
Have you checked that they actually work that depot? Could they work at another depot? Could they be going to another location in the morning?
Are they the same vans each day?
Could it be a part of a winter plan so that if there is bad weather they are already located in the right places? Did the Council get hauled up by the Daily Mail last year for having all their vans in a yard which delayed their response to gritting pavements etc?
If it bothers you do ask your local councillor to investigate......Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

I work with these guys every day (sub contractor) ,, you would not believe the grief they get from people who have no idea how the system works..
Do the people complaining not understand that budgets are being squeezed from the top and these guys are at the bottom of the pyramid for expenses cuts? More and more for less and less pay
Anyone who has a complaint about these workers?
Go work with them for a week on their wages and see how you feel working to the deadlines they now have to comply with0 -
Alll valid points of view as is mine, surely not all the vehicles i see need to be at workers homes , yes some are on call and on winter projects and what ever else but it still a fact that some are using to commute to and from work.the calc i made is a average approx one if i am any where near being correct it can save thousands of pounds a year.
The councils have to find savings well this is an area they can save in they should find their way to to work like most people at cost to them not the tax payer.do tha calc with 10,000 vehicles it = a hell of a lot of money0 -
My calculation is wrong very wrong
£3,396 x 52 weeks = £176,592 a year OMG it's a hell of a lot of money
Multiply this by how many councils are letting this go on and it's a stagering amount of tax payers money0 -

You are indeed correct that £33,960 x 52 = £1.77 million and also correct that £1.77 million is quite a lot of money.
However since the numbers that you calculation are based on are just plucked out of thin air, this doesn't mean much.
You could make a FOIA request to your local council if you want to know the real numbers.0
