Is there backup/imagining software that does not need to be installed on the computer and can be run from a USB drive?
And free.

Go to http://www.makeuseof.com/pages/best-portable-apps - this has a list of programs that can be run from a usb drive. Also a search on makeuseof.com may come up with some good answers.0

FreeFileSync is a great backup app that creates a mirror of a folder (a bit like a manual version of Dropbox). There's a portable version for running from USB drives:

Clonezilla is a great piece of imaging software and can be booted off a USB drive.

I think many of them will, to be honest, because backup software needs to be able to boot on a machine where the existing operating system is broken or missing altogether; otherwise you can't restore.
Which operating system are you using? Some of the backup software tools don't boot so well on PCs which have UEFI boot, such as machines which came with Windows 8/8.1 pre-installed.0
