Excel help - saving to xxxxD010

I have a (by my standards!) quite complex spreadsheet with a lot of columns, formulae and around 10 pages. When I try to save a message comes up saying it could not be saved due to a sharing violation and try saving to a different file. When I say ok to that it says the file I am trying to open (which I'm not!) is in a different format to that specified by the file extension. The file name is a series of letters and number, each time I try it is different but all end in D010.

I can temporarily solve it by renaming the file, so using save as, but the next time I try to save the new file the same thing occurs.

I've input some info the last day or so but haven't changed formulae so at a loss.

Help please!

Thanks.

    What size is the file?
    What file extension has it?
Does it have any embedded macros or links to other files?
    Is it shared?
What version of excel are you using?
What Operating system are you using?
How much free disk space does your computer have?
    How much RAM?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

    1. 6,755kb
    2. xlsx
    3. No, just a lot of conditional formatting and IF statements.
    4. No.
    5. It's Office Professional 2010.
    6. Windows 7 64 bit
    7. 383GB free of 465GB
    8. 4GB

    Thanks.

You could try this... (Used to work with large files containing lots of formulas back in the old days).
The background excel information may have become corrupt, particularly if this is a file you save a lot.
So, open a new spreadsheet, and one page at a time copy and paste all the pages from the original into the new one. After each page copy, save the file.
You may well find the file will end up being smaller than the original, at least that's what used to happen with corruptions for me.

A couple of other questions... Have you coloured the tabs? (Pet hate of mine) or tried to open it in an older version of excel?

Thanks will try. Though a lot of the sheets are linked so I assume I would need to recreate those?

Yes, being female the tabs are coloured :o, does that really make a difference?

Don't think I've tried to open in older version - are you suggesting I try or asking if I have?

  • It might not even be an issue with the file itself - could be Anti-Virus or Windows Search Indexing causing it.

Have you tried Open and Repair or Inspect Document?

What file type are you trying to save as?

You will get this if the file is a template and you try to save back to it.
