What sort of TV should I buy? Where to start?

My 10 yr old tv has finally irreparably died and I want to get a new one, however I'm blinded by the possibilities. I read the advice in the Argos catalogue as a starting point but I'm still not sure. I have Sky at the moment as I can't get freeview where I live. I've seen lcd at a friend's house and the picture seemed out of focus much of the time. And should I get a digital one? Oh dear - where should I start? and HCD?
I'm tempted to rig up my old portable to the sky box, -it gives a great picture, even though it was produced before remote controllers were even dreamt of. However it doesn't add a lot to the decor of my living room.
Help please!! And I definitely want something that will last longer than 10 years, I think that's a rubbish life span for a telly.
Thanks
