Started job so didnt sign on - lost 10 days JSA!

Got a job which wasnt sorted until late on a Wednesday starting Thursday.
My normal signing on day was the Friday.
Tried to contact the jobcentre to let them know before Friday. Not the first time that its proven impossible to get through.
Tried all the next week - no answer. Of course, being in a new job I couldn't spend hours on the phone.
In the end, I sent the slip back in the post.
Got a letter telling me my claim had been cancelled because I hadn't turned up to sign on. So I wrote to them explaining the situation (no point trying to phone again!).
Someone left a message for me now saying I should have phoned them within 5 days and now my claim has been closed. They're going to send me an appeal form but its likely I will lose any benefit for the last 12 days (since last sign on).
Really annoyed about this. They know how difficult it is to contact them. Millions of people out there not willing to work, I get a job and they stitch me up for a few quid at the end......
;64393025]Anyone know if theres an appeal process?
There is. You need to ask the DWP to review their decision first and if they won't change their decision you can then appeal against that.
You will need to show that you were still job seeking until the day before you started work. If you weren't (ie you had stopped looking because you had a job to start) then in theory you aren't entitled to any JSA.0 -
Did you use your own phone? Can you print off a call record to send with the appeal. Highlight the ones for the job centre.
Get your employer to write a letter confirming the job was finalised on the Wednesday.0 -

Is it no longer standard practice to complete and return the relevant part of the signing book issued at the start of a claim?0 -

Its a bit complex. I work through my own limited company so I'm the employer as well. Basically, I use agencies to find contract work.
Trouble is theres no way in a million years the agency would be bothered to supply this info.0 -

I did so after a few days but they're saying it arrived after the 5 days allowed.0 -

I know this doesn't help no, but I believe all jobcentres have an e-mail address, I think. Though some are more willing to publicise it than others.
I just e-mail when I need to contact them instead of phoning. It saves time and money. Even if you're able to get through to the contact centre on the phone, there's every chance they'll transfer you to the incorrect jobcentre and/or you get cut off.
You can e-mail as well as try and phone. At least with an e-mail you have written evidence of the fact you tried to contact them, and what you told them.0
