  • If your full name is Dan-Rockefeller-Dan, I would recommend Snap-on.

They are very very good, never been able to break one, and kinda disappointed that I don't have shares in them!

Failing that, my toolbox was Gedore sets.

The Halfords Professional range come reccomended at not too high a price. I bought one of the socket sets last year which included spanners and I cant really fault them.

Well, no need if you have easy access to the nut, and the bolt doesn't protrude beyond the nut...

  • So you want sockets not spanners. Only thing on those that may fail is the ratchet.

Halfords pro, draper expert or ckarke pro will be more than good enough for you.

When you're trying to decide which to buy i think you have to take into consideration how often you're going to be using them. A mechanic working in a garage who makes his living and depends on decent tools could buy the likes of Snap-on and it's a good buy. To someone who only needs to be able to keep his own car on the road or do jobs around the house, to get a set of spanners from Lidl would probably be Ok.
Have a look in charity shops; boot sales or even Freecycle to see if someone is clearing their garage, to see are there any good makes.

Forgive me but is your toolbox "just in case" or getting fresh air & exercise daily?
Even used to be reputable names have shifted manufacture to China.

I'd look at carboots & the slightly rusty stuff. If you can see a makers mark, and it checks out reputably, then buy & soak in hot citric acid for a few minutes, then clean them up, oil them & enjoy them!
