Importing Raw Materials

Hi

I'm thinking of starting a business which would involve importing my raw materials from abroad, mainly Italy.

Can anyone point me in the direction of good advice re: taxes, how to do it, etc. I will look at the HMRC website tonight. (Sister-in-law used to be a VAT inspector, so I know the trouble you can get into :rotfl: ).

From the Italy or any EC country there should be no charges at all. If you are VAT registered, the suppliers can send it nett, without Italian VAT being charged.

If it is coming from non EC countries, you will have to pay VAT on the total cost (carriage plus cost of goods) and according to what the goods are and where they are coming from a duty charge. These charges and any customs clearance fees from the carrier have to be paid on entry to the UK.

Don't hesitate to contact the VAT people by phone or via their site. I have found them to be very helpful.
