Currys PC World still mis-selling warranties

Hi,
A colleague of mine recently went to Currys PC World to buy a new microwave for our office.
It was clear to the sales person that the appliance was to be used for a business - my colleague explained that this was what it was going to be used for. She also asked for a VAT receipt, again stating the purchase was for business, and some of the paperwork she has says "PC World Business" on it.
They sold her an extended warranty on the product, but the terms clearly state on the first page that cooking appliances are not covered when used for business.
I noticed, and she contacted the helpline who agreed to send a cheque to refund the amount paid (although they didn't seem that forthcoming to be honest).
If it wasn't for me noticing though, she'd have paid the £40 for an invalidated guarantee.
How do they get away with this?!?

Because they are salesman and there job is to sell, your colleague is as much to blame for not reading what she is buying. Like your colleagea the saleman wouldn't even know the contents of the warranty, but they dont need to make a claim on it.0

It's not a difficult pitfall to avoid.

To be fair, if she had claimed, it's unlikely it would have been questioned whether the microwave had been used for business.
I've had several items repaired/swapped under Curry's/PC World's WEH agreement and not once been challenged on the usage of the product.
But you're right, it shouldn't have technically been sold - although this should probably have gone on the praise, vent and warnings board.0 -
Depends.
If it's used in a business it doesn't matter. So for example using it in the staff room no problem. If using to say heat soup up for paying customers that comes under a business use.
However if the Microwave was under £150 then there would be no way for the Aftersales people to know. As the process goes like this "Does machine work? No, Under Instance Replacement? Yes, Great go pick another."0 -

Really?
I happily paid £20 last week to cover my printer. If it breaks or is damaged in anyway in the next three years I get a no quibble swap for another printer of the same value there and then. Which is great, because I can't afford to lose a printer for weeks at a time if it goes away for repair.
A lady in an electrical shop the other day was very upset that her 14 month old printer would have to go off for repair for at least 2 weeks as it was broken. Her daughter had university work that needed to be printed off that week and had no access to another printer. She had also said 'No Thanks' to an extended warranty from an electrical retailer.
To be honest, I think she would have been a lot happier if she had been £20 down and walking out with a working printer.
The key is to look at whether you need the cover and what it offers, not to just say no to everything!0 -

An office would probably only ned a basic one, you can actually pick them up new now for £30
Same with printers....make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
