Prepay electricity by EDF issue

Hi everyone,

In my last flat I was on prepay electric. I topped it up regularly and had no debt on it. When I moved out it had a little bit of credit left on it. My landlord has contacted me a month and a half later to say that it is several pounds in debt. Does this mean my credit history will be affected? Will it keep adding negative money to the machine? I have no access to the property and can't top it up. What should I do? I've called up EDF when I moved out and they sent me a "final electricity statement" which says I need to do nothing further. I've also emailed for a confirmation that they have closed down my account but haven't heard back yet.

My main worry is that it keeps adding money to the meter. What is the maximum debt a prepay meter can get into for standing charges before the electric gets cut off? I don't want to have this impact me in anyway so I'm trying to sort it.

Many thanks for any advice.

If you've got a final reading and final bill with nothing more to pay then that should be it. (you did take a final reading and send it to EDF didn't you?)

The meter will still rack up a standing charge, even though no one is using the electricity and that's up to the landlord to pay. The next tenant should contact the supplier with a reading as soon as he moves in so he doesn't end up paying the outstanding charge.
Just tell your ex-landlord that the bill was settled, send him a copy if you like and that it's now down to him

I did send a final reading for the gas but that was not prepaid. The electric didn't have a reading and was prepay. Edf just told me to destroy the key and that was it, no reading needed. But this was on the phone so I have no proof. The gas and electric bills were both sent to my new address. I paid off the gas bill but electric just said nothing needs to be done further. Am I right in assuming I can just let it go now? And if money keeps being added to the meter for non-payment, it will not be connected to my name? Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it matelodave.
