I am planning on getting a group of friends from church together for a work day to make things for a children's hospice and wondered if any of you have had experience of this and if so what projects did you do. We have a variety of sewing skills so we will be able to take on most sewing projects. I will contact the hospice to see if they need donations but think it would be a good idea if I have some ideas to offer them for them to think about

  • I used to help with a school craft group (Mothers not children) and we made things for a fair held once a year. One year we made lounge pants essentially pj bottoms out of old duvet covers. These are very popular with young people who think matchy pjs are not trendy but lounge pants and a t shirt are cool. Why old duvet covers? Well they have been washed so many times that they are lovely and soft with a peachy finish. The advantage of these pants is they don't have to fit perfectly. We made them in 3 or 4 sizes and once cut up they are quite simple to sew. They might be popular with the children at the hospice and would be a useful gift for family and friends to buy. Also small items like scrunchies and pretty hairbands are easy to make and fun gifts for children at the hospice.
There are lots of paper ideas as well but as you mentioned sewing I thought I'd tell you about these.

Not sure if this is suitable or not - Wiggly Bags are made locally for patients on the oncology ward at Bristol Children's Hospital. A wiggly bag is used throughout treatment to hold the central line which is used to give medicine and blood, keeping it safe.

  • I know it's not sewing but felted soap is fun to make and it's lovely to use afterwards.

Thanks I will have a look at the soap. Also I like the idea of soft PJs. Thanks everyone. Keep the ideas coming.

  • I was going to say wiggly bags, funky fabric pads that go around pegs/jej (do a search for g tube pad tutorial), cushions, positioning pillows etc although the hospice may be over flowing with some things. I'm not sure how many kids who use hospices use wiggly bags, obviously some kids do but I've found it's more kids with conditions like cancer or gastro who use them but don't use a hospice
