Framing Completed Cross Stitch

I came across some cross stitch projects which I'd started years ago and I've now now completed them. I want to frame them but I'm not sure how to go about it.

They're not going to be family heirlooms so I don't want to spend too much on the framing.

I've looked on the internet and picked up the basic idea of cutting the centre out of a piece of mounting board, stretching the fabric over this piece and then slotting this back into the hole, (if I've understood it correctly).

So I'm guessing this method won't work with your average picture frame. Can anyone tell me what I'll need?

Thanks

  • You can do it yourself.

The picture frame will need to be deep enough to hold the mount card and glass though. Usually the wider the frame, the deeper it is.

Ensure the mount card and any tape you use is acid free. They will say on the packaging if they are.

Ideally you'll also need a card border between the fabric and the glass. The glass shouldn't touch the fabric. The air needs to circulate. Otherwise the fabric could perish over time. I don't do this though and haven't had a problem but my things aren't that old.

You can buy standard sized things and just cut down the mount card you use to back your fabric. Choose the same colour as your fabric.

Take your time to get it right. It'll be worth it in the end.
