garage rip offs
Can anyone advise please
On the 13/01/2014 I took my van in for an MOT and master service the garage informed me that it required rear brake discs and pads four new tyres, & wheel alignment, I had the work carried out and paid £493.17 plus vat The van was running fine but I noticed that the engine light was on so rang the garage who told me to bring it back and they would check it out on their diagnostic machine I took it back to the garage the next day 14/01/2014 they were unable to find the fault but rang another garage down the road who had an electrical fault diagnostic machine and sent me there for further investigation. When I started the van the engine light was out but the service light the one with the spanner was on I drove it to the other garage where they took it into their work shop to put on their diagnostic machine they told me it was the mass air flow sensor and they could replace it for me I was then told it also needed a new battery as it wouldn’t start (the battery was checked at Halfords on the 08/01/2014 and at the first garage during the service on the 13/01/2014 both said it was fine) they jump started the van and brought it out to the front where the mechanic said it was lacking in power, I said it was fine and had no problems with it but when I went to drive away found it had no power at all and couldn’t even pick up enough speed to get in to second gear, I went back into the garage where I was told it was the mass air flow sensor, and the engine wasn’t getting the right mix of air and fuel yet it was fine when I drove it in, so with no other option but to leave it there, I agreed to the repair being carried out. Now I’m no mechanic but I do feel like I’ve been ripped off as it’s now going to cost me a further £300.00 to get it sorted who do I complain to the first garage or the second garage. Thanks

Have you had the work carried out yet?
A MAF can go at any time and a loss of power is a symptom...We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
However, A MAF sensor needs tiny heated wires to work, and can easily be damaged by clumsy handling. I think the OP is wondering if the garage has damaged the MAF while doing the other work. It's not unknown for this to happen, and then try to fob the cost off onto the unsuspecting owner. If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0
