When we started working from home, the rules were that if we had a room designated purely as an office, we would have to pay business rates on that area of the house. If it was dual-purpose and used as, for example, a guest bedroom on occasions, business rates wouldn't be levied. Check if the rules are still the same.

It's a shame that MFI is not still in business. Our study/office is fitted out completely with their home office range of units. Very well designed and not particularly expensive at the time.

Whilst on the subject, now that they are closed does anyone do affordable fitted home office furniture?
  • My desk for the past 25 years or so has been a long length of white kitchen work top, laid across two four draw chests of drawers (co-incidentally bought from MFI). Sturdy & long lasting with storage included - but also fairly easy to move.
