When I look for an answer all I get is about using a wi-fi printer.
Well my perfectly good printer does not have wi-fi so can I print using a lightning adaptor and a USB cable?

No. When you buy an Apple product you get locked into their ecosystem. If you'd bought Android you could easily print from most apps using Google Print services. There are fewer options for iOS

Knightstyle - do you see a USB connector on your iPad? Have you found iPad drivers for your printer on the manufacturer's website? Very simple answer for you though - email whatever you want to print to yourself. Open that email on the computer connected to the printer, print. Send any complaints directly to Apple Inc, 1 Infinite Loop, California.0

Printer Pro may work for you

It prints through your computer through a desktop helper app. Your computer needs to be turned on and connected to your printer.
It will only print items that offer the "open in..." option so is not as flexible as having a fully fledged wifi printer but offers a solution of sorts.0 -
Thanks for helpful answer. Yes I am emailing things to myself at the moment to print just would like an easier way.0

The easy way is to get a new printer.
Fitting a USB adapter to the iPad wouldn't help as iOS has no way of communicating with it for printing purposes, it only supports Airprint/wireless, although there may be third party Apps that can.
I've recently replaced an old Samsung colour laser that was getting more and more unreliable with a new Samsung printer and one of the benefits is that I can now print from any wireless device.
It wasn't the reason I bought the printer but it has certainly proved useful. The memsahib printed a PDF file she'd been sent directly from her iPad recently and I've printed from my Samsung Galaxy mobile on a couple of occasions. Much better than emailing stuff to the PC for printing. :TOne by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
You can get adapters to make normal printers wireless, not 100% certain that would then allow you to print wirelessly from the ipad, I believe it depends on the brand/ model of printer.0
