18185 with Free Skype landline?

I would like to have a Skype Landline and setup the same in my families homes but for ppl without Skype I would want the calls to go through 18185 as cheaper than Skype.

I don't want to use the USB phone as if the computer is off I wouldn't get calls.

Sorry so what is the question???

You can get a skype phone that does not require a computer to be on. i.e. the Philips phone which has its own base station. Skype sell it, but it is not that cheap.
  • Can I get a VOIP phone which will let me talk to other Skype users for free but when I want to talk to 01 or 02 numbers I want to use 18185. I don't want to have to have the computer on either

To use the short access code 18185 you will need a dedicated BT Landline. Or a cable line, non bt line, or mobile contract if you use the geographical or freephone access numbers.

In any case, Skype is a proprietary standard (remember Betamax videos).

I am sure others with more experience of VoIP will be along shortly to recommend other options.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Well I am with BT at the moment and am using 18185 so am only paying 0p/min 5p connection but I regulary call my brothers each with BT lines and broadband so wanted to cut the 5p charges to nothing!

Get the people you know with Hype to dump that and switch to a real VoIP provider, Sipgate would do in this instance, call between Sipgate users are free you get a real local number at no charge.

Then buy an ATA which allows both VoIP and PSTN connection, you can then use a regular phone to call using the PSTN or VoIP.

Something like: http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=3473 which you connect to your broadband router and connect to the phone line.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

Expensive and proprietary and you're stuck with Skype.

Use a SIP ATA with a SIP provider, and you can use any DECT or corded phone and have the choice of several providers should you change your mind.

  • You should be helping Martin draw up a new Home phone saving. So your calls are only 2p per call (upto n hour) his are 5p!

I appreciate all your help on this, have you got this setup then?

So if all my Landline calls are less than an hour, then this is the one to go for? Did you mention before that I could get rid of one of my BT lines and have a fresh free number with these cheap calls ? Perhaps using the other phone for Mobiles. Could I also like the Orchid diallers block certain numbers?
