Personally I would go for a nice bright mix of flowers, be it pink, blue, orange etc0

May I suggest that you wait for 2 or 3 weeks before you send your flowers?
In the turmoil of a death, a funeral and all the chaos (both practical and emotional) which follows, your gift may be just one of many and the widow may be too fraught to recognise and appreciate who you are and what your kindness means.
However, a few weeks down the line, when all the fuss has died down and she is feeling lost and alone, your flowers might be the absolutely perfect way to show her that there is still sunshine and friendship out there.
By then, too, daffodils will be available. I was once given something like 150 in-bud daffodils. They filled every vase, every window sill, and eventually every jam jar I owned. In the warmth of the house, they all opened up and I shall never forget that it looked to me like a film set of lavishness and luxury.
I'd also add that when it comes to flowers, there is no such thing as 'wrong' or 'inappropriate'. All flowers are beautiful and it would be a very ungrateful recipient who thought otherwise.0 -

thank you everyone for the help. I have gone with the hand tied colourful mix with sunflowers.
To the above poster, I do appreciate what you say but I really want to do something now. the lady is my aunt and she has her immediate family with her at the moment so even if she is too overwhelmed at the moment I would still feel better if I sent them. I intend to do the same on what would have be my uncles birthday later in the year just so she is aware we are thinking of her.
I speak to her often even though we don't live close and would just feel really bad if I didn't sand them.
But thank you very much, I do understand what you are saying.0 -
We went to two funerals which had no flowers. Couple of weeks later I ordered an arrangement in a gift bag0

I was going to suggest sending a flower card which is basically a card with a small bunch of flowers inside, but I see you have already chosen what you are going to send, I think that is a good choice.

Thank you, I got a lovely card today as well, not that anything will make her feel better at the moment but have the need to do something.0

Some years ago when I suffered a bereavement I was inundated with flowers. I struggled to find enough vases for them all but I appreciated the thoughtfulness and kindness of everyone who sent them.
But I agree that it's also a kind thought to send some flowers a few weeks after the funeral as that's often the time when the help and visits cease so it's nice to know that people are still holding one in their thoughts.
Later that year receiving a couple of beautiful bouquets at Christmas was very poignant and another one at the first anniversary was very special.
It will be a very sad time but these gestures will be appreciated I'm sure.0 -
What a lovely idea, and I'm sure your friend will appreciate the thought no matter which flowers you sent.
When my partner passed away suddenly, I was sent some beautiful Lillie's from some close friends. I know many people think of death when they think of Lillie's but personally they were my favourite flowers and the thought never crossed my mind.
What I'm trying to say is, although it's lovely that you are trying to give it some thought, don't worry too much about buying the 'wrong' type of flowers as it's more than likely she will have more things on her mind then 'These flowers remind me of death!'. It really is the thought and support that matters.0 -

Cards are often kept and re-read for years and years, so although it can't help now it might well be a comfort in the future when things are less raw.0 -
Although a different situation, my workmates arranged for some flowers to be sent to me after my dad died.
I really appreciated the gesture, and felt comforted that they were thinking of me.
I think it's a lovely thing for you to do, and yellow flowers are my favourites tooEarly retired - 18th December 2014
