Over Credit Limit Charge - Credit scoring

Hi all,

I repay my Barclaycard in full every month. However, the credit limit is low and in December I exceeded it (yes, Christmas!) I didn't notice until I logged in online. I immediately repaid it, but still incurred a £12 "Over Credit Limit Charge". I have been with them for many years and always repaid in full every month. The Christmas spending was no problem, I'd budgeted for it and had the money there, just annoyingly didn't notice. My wife and I use the card a lot, for the cashback.

So, I have 2 questions:

1) Will there be a black mark on my nice clean credit score now? If so, can I get it removed?

2) Has anyone had a charge like this waived and is it worth asking?

Obviously point 1 is the more concerning, even though I'm not planning on taking on any additional credit any time soon. I've really only got the mortgage and credit cards, which are always paid off, but you never know if I want to e.g. borrow more for an extension or similar.

Thanks in advance.

Same happened to myself when I had a Barclaycard Initial about 10 years ago. I called them, got through to their UK call center and explained what happened, they refunded the over limit fee and nothing ever showed up on my credit reports.

Will breaching my account T&Cs mean I lose my cashback for the current year/future years?

If you paid the amount straight away i.e within a few days of going over then it doesn't normally show on your reports.

Give Barclaycard a ring and explain what happened. They will prob refund the £12.

    Hope this helps

I think I've seen it posted on here that if the account (not necessarily Barclaycard though) is restored back under the limit before the statement is produced, it doesn't generate a charge (and therefore no 'black mark' either?).

However, and reading between the lines somewhat, it sounds like a statement had already been produced for the OP? If that's the case, then they should expect another £12 charge on the next statement (as you generally incur a fee for each statement period in which you're overlimit).

Hi all. Thanks for the replies. Account charge, payment and statement were all on the same day, 2 days after it went over. My payment and the charge were in the statement. Interesting about the cash back, I hope I get it, it's about £200!

Well, good news for me. They agreed to remove the charge and confirmed it wouldn't affect my cashback. The guy I talked to said he thought the charge would be removed from my credit file, but to check my report (which I should probably get anyway, haven't for some years) and call back if it hadn't.

Happy ending for me :) :T
