I believe rents, and mortgage payments, are included in RPI but not in CPI.
Not sure that RPI includes rent either, but it is hard to find a definitive statement.

Fair comment. I should have said many rather than most. The point is that this essential is not included. Wheras luxuries like Blu Ray disc players are.
Currently 36% of households are rented. Still not sure that private renting is included in any official inflation measure.

The title of this thread is a good example for an unqualified statement.

The title of this thread was a tease, bless your cotton socks, poking fun at all the media morons who would uncritically announce that "inflation is down".

if you follow the ONS link (earlier in the thread), and download the "Consumer Price Inflation Reference Tables, December 2013" spreadsheet ...
    .

Alas, excel spreadsheets go bananas on my Mac. I miss Lotus 123: whatever happened to it?

CPI includes fewer housing costs - see table 11 - but does still include rent.

Found it in Annex A 04.1. Agreed. Both indices include private and social rent. They differ in home ownership costs.

The RPI inflation rate was up from November's 2.6%p.a. to December's 2.7%p.a.

Good news, that means FIT payments are up by 2.7% from April
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Fudging the figures because they go with what looks best for the govt.

Not So the figures are produced by the ONS independent of the government.!!!
