My wonderful Canon Pixma 4500 has died - completely :( so I am looking for recommendations for a new printer!

Must Have: auto duplex, fast mono printing, ability to print on paper up to 180gsm, able to print various sizes from 6x4 to A4, decent quality photo printing, borderless photo printing

Highly desirable: The ability to take paper in vertically (J or / feed) - rather than from horizontal (C feed) - I use this when printing on envelopes & thin card as they can often jam when being folded round the c shape! Ability to print on paper up to 220gsm or heavier, ability to print down to A6 size. Two paper trays so I don't have to constantly take the A4 out to print envelopes or photos. Good running costs - ideally will have single colour cartridges for ease of replacement (the 3 colours never run out at the same time so why change a whole cartridge when only one needs doing?)

Desirable
Airprint to print from iPad

The CD Print function is nice to have, but realistically I don't use it very much & I have never used the "direct print" function!

I print varying amounts - maybe a couple of pages one week & then another week I will need to print 30 copies of a 6 page document! Most of my printing can be mono, but I do colour documents too - maybe 70%/30% ish?

I have a flatbed scanner so don't need an all in one.

I like Canon printers, I have had mixed experience with Epson & have never liked HPs due to the cost of inks!!

My trusty old Canon "passed on" a few months ago. I too have a good flatbed scanner which still performs well. All I need is a printer to print on plain or photo paper - it is becoming more and more difficult to find just a printer. I wanted a Canon again and ended up with a choice of one !

Could I draw your attention to this, as someone has mentioned this printer:

I have fitted this to my last two printers - the savings are huge............
  • Did you look at the latest Pixma MG models that have 5 or 6 cartridges? I haven't used any of them personally but according to my research they are pretty good printers (although some are quite expensive).
