The gardens go back to back with the neighbouring road and apparently the neighbour that lives over the back came round and started kicking off about the other tree being cut down.

Our neighbour was telling us about it and she said "we have never fallen out with any of our neighbours and seem to make a big thing out of this.

Hubby said he regrets ever mentioning about the money, but I think he felt obliged to at the time.

Coupled with the neighbour the other side of us (joined on), putting a note through our door before Xmas telling us to remind our visitors not to block in her drive so she can get off it. It wasn't even us, I remember seeing a white van parked there on the day in question, but it wasn't anything to do with us. Next thing we know a snotty note is in our porch early the next morning. I sent a note back really ripping into her and she must've realised her mistake. We got a Xmas card from her, but I didn't sent one back out of principle.

    Lovely!

  • I wouldn't have allowed a neighbour to cut down a tree in my own garden in the first place. The damned cheek of it! I'd be minded to plant a new one in its place just to be ruddy awkward. There are scarce few trees in most of our built environments as it is. We need more of them not fewer.

But your husband has agreed to pay them £100 towards it so pay up you should.

You ripped into your neighbour for making a mistake? it would have been much better to correct her politely. If you carry on snapping at neighbours and not following through with a promise you are likely to be seen as a bad neighbour by the whole street in due course.

Im with post #13. If you tihkn this is the end of it,think again. They sound like they have issues and they will be pushing them soon..
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Neighbour code for: "I have never fallen out with a neighbour, and don't want you to be the first, so pay up! " ;)
  • In the bigger picture £100 ain't a lot. I also would pay it.

Your neighbour is probably sitting at home wondering when your husband is going to bring round the £100 he promised. I suspect your neighbour just doesn't want to push it incase he comes across in the wrong way.

Knock on the door and hand the £100 over with a box of chocolates or something else as a minor token of appreciation.

It's really not worth falling out over. Do you really want to have that awkward silence when you meet in the street? Get it paid! :D
  • I'd pay the £100 because I gave my word that I would, and that sort of integrity is important to me.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

No, it's neigbour code for "We've never fallen out with our neighbours but plenty have fallen out with us."

I promise you that this is going to be the thin end of the wedge. Gawd knows what they think they're entitled to do next! Be vigilant for the next one coming up and don't be a push-over.

Alternatively - since they decided to do what they wanted with your property, tell them you've decided to spend their £100 on something nice for your garden...(those leylandii mentioned by Daftyduck!)
