Taking back to factory settings?

I've been given an old laptop which is running slow and occasionally freezing and I thought taking it back to factory settings might be a good idea? Please feel free to tell me if you disagree and think I should just leave it as it is. I obviously don't want any of the files of the person who gave it me so not worried about backing them up and saving them. What do I need to do thought? It's a windows 7 machine and there is no disk or anything with it for the operating system, do I need one?
Thanks
Thanks

There should be a Factory Restore option via a disk image on the restore partition, check the manual.
