A lot of googling reveals that sadly you are right and I am wrong! Looks like it comes into force as of now, Jan 2014
The charges from my vet are as follows:
Pet passport: £36- lasts pet's lifetime (unless you lose it)
Rabies vaccination £32- lasts 3 years
My vet is willing to watch me administer my own worming tablets and sign the form for no charge. Very nice of him. (tablets bought from on-line vet company therefore considerably cheaper)
Not as expensive as I first thought but still a bit of a extra hassle. I am told by the ferry company that there are about 50 sailings per day from british ports. Are they really going to police all that?Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Doesn't this have to be done either way?
Yes I agree, of course- except you wouldn't normally be vaccinating against rabies! My dogs are routinely wormed, vaccinated and micro-chipped.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

That's not as bad as I thought - I feared it would be hundreds rather than a single hundred IYSWIM! Will they have to been seen by a vet for flea and worm treatment before returning to the UK?
I guess that the ferry companies will have to check the paperwork before you're allowed to take the dogs on board...0 -
Blimey! Thanks for all the replies. Certainly food for thought.
When I heard I might not need a passport, I had in my head that the best idea would be to hire a car from over here (London) and take it to Ireland (are you allowed to do that?), and take her with me on ferry while my parents got a plane with my children. But now that I need a passport, I am petrified of taking her and then for some reason not being allowed to bring her back, especially because of her breed etc.
It now looks like we are staying at my Nan's house and she is going to my uncle's for the week, so doggie would have somewhere to stay, but I am thinking it is best if she does just stay here and I pay for a host family to mind her.
And re the vaccinations and worming etc, yep these are things that should be done, but haven't, no excuse for that really, but there you go.Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

From what I can make out no passport needed to return to UK therefore you don't need the extra worming. (Flea treatment not part of required regime)
Also from my chat with ferry company employee I don't think they are taking any action.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Just really read the advice on bringing pets to Ireland and I think you are making the right decision since your dog (as listed as a dangerous breed) would have to be wearing a muzzle when in a public place- not a pleasant thought.
Anyhow glad you started this thread because I'm getting the pet passports for my two next week. bet no one will ask to see them but better safe than sorryBeing polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!
