Dehumidifiers simply disguise the issue /mask it.
They treat the symptoms, not the actual issue.
Go find what really does give your issue, fix it.

A dehumidifier solves the problem. I don't want to stop breathing, cooking, washing in hot water or drying wet clothing. Opening the windows at this time of year makes the house cold and lets in damp winter air.0 -

I agree with you on that - we got our dehumidifier for the same reason....0 -
I assume that I am correct in thinking that it is better to put the heating on low for a while each day - rather than relying on opening windows to let moisture escape ?
ie) Is it damper outside than inside (approx 70 % humidity) ?0 -

OK, it's just that mine runs on after pressing the off switch to dry the ferrous metal condensing plate. I was concerned that your water maybe turning brown!0
