tues 14 jan - anyone around? Re Breadmaker

Options
I have bought my daughter a breadmaker for her birthday today, and realised that she probably won't have the stuff she needs to start using it.

In general, what ingredients will I need to get for her so she can start baking straight away?

I know strong flour, and dried yeast, but apart from that, I'm stuck.

Can anyone help please? I want to nip to the supermarket and get what she needs before popping in to see her before I go to work this morning.

I will be leaving at 8am!

  • Thank you bunty109. I thought I remembered something about milk powder, but I didn't think about butter. Or salt. She doesn't have salt at home, as she never uses it, so I will have to remember to get her a drum of salt!

  • Duh! I am still half asleep. I could have googled myself. Sorry - and thank you :)

Depends on the type of loaf you want to make but basic ingredients:
Quick yeast (for breadmakers not for hand baking)
    Strong flour
    sugar
    salt
    oil or butter
    water

and thats it - I make a loaf every day for the family lunch boxes and they turn out yummy every time!

If it's a Panasonic, it'll be pretty foolproof - even I produced a perfect loaf with my first attempt with my Panasonic

Hope you managed to get the things you needed. For a plain loaf you would only need strong white flour, dry yeast, salt (to make it palatable), and then possibly some sunflower oil and sugar to help with the texture and to help the yeast to rise. Extras like dried milk powder are sometimes included in the recipe but are not strictly necessary.

Well.. I wouldn't want to be quite so negative (!) but yes you may find the recipes need tweaking a bit before you get a loaf with the consistency you like. Don't be disappointed if the first one isn't great.

I've not tried a Panasonic BM, mine's a Russell Hobbs. I tend to use the breadmaker more for pizza dough these days. There's something about making bread by hand that's quite therapeutic, if you've got the time :)
