Starting a charity

Hi

My grandson was born sleeping just before Christmas and my daughter has been today to look at the price of headstones. They are so expensive and as she is a single parent, her partner left when she was pregnant, and is only on minimum pay it is going to take forever to save the money to pay for one.

My questions is can we raise money by organising events and having a raffle or would we need to set up a charity to do this. Also can we legally set up a charity simply to raise money for the headstone and how easy is this to do?

Thank you in advance for any help

I am so sorry for your loss.

You can fundraise for something like this without setting up a charity, as long as you do not describe yourself as a registered charity. There are some regulations about raffles, btw, it's OK to do a 'cloakroom ticket' raffle if you are only selling tickets at an event (where you can reasonably expect most people who've bought one to be there for the draw), but if you are selling over several days then you need to get 'proper' tickets printed, to register the raffle etc etc etc. There's a little bit of information in this thread, but it's not something I've ever done so I'm not an expert.

Moving on, you cannot set up a charity for the benefit of one individual, so it wouldn't be appropriate for this, and it's a lot of work in any case.

Have you had any support from anyone like SANDS? Is it worth asking them if there are any ways of getting help with a headstone?

  • Sorry if I'm being thick but could I organise a disco night with a buffet charge for tickets and do a raffle too on the night.
