To open joing acccount mean joint credit rating?

Me and my partner are wanting to open a joint bank account that we plan to use to pay bills. We have been accepted from nationwide. However, I read somewhere that if one has a bad credit rating it effects the other? Basically I have 1 default but a score of 919 so good. My partner has 1 or 2 defaults and apoor credit of 400ish. Should we open a joint account or should I decline as we haven't signed anything yet.
Also, my default is with NatWest an old overdraft, I owe £512 which I can easily pay. I was paying the other amount when higher but it didn't come up on my file as being paid just the amount was getting less. It did get forwarded to a credit agency which I have now left and so hense default(I think) and late payments. Should I now contact NatWest and ask if I pay the full amount now can they remove the default? Im unsure how it works.
Finally, I have car finance and have got a ppi of if my car is written off my loan will be quashed. I didn't actually want it and didn't understand what it was as it was taken out Dec 2009 so ends this Dec. Do I have a right to claim back the ppi payments?
Thanks for any help x

If they have accepted you then they will have already searched your credit files and because it was a joint application possibly added a financial association link between the both of you already. :(

    Hope this helps

I would of thought the link would be created when statements are issued (monthly) as that's how often most lenders report to the CRA'S.

What are the default dates as shown on both of your credit files? Defaults will remain on your credit records for 6 years from the date of default. I very much doubt NatWest will remove the default as its a true representation of what happened, however if you don't ask you don't get. You could try negotiating with them, full payment for default removal.

Without sounding rude, as you both have defaults, why are you now considering not accepting/closing the account?

BTW those credit scores you see are useless. They are not seen by others when you apply for credit. Its only there to help give you an indication of what you credit status may look like.

Mainly because i have a good rating and hoping for the default to be sorted and dont want his poor rating to effect mine. He has already got a default for something removed, not sure of details to be honest.
If its not going to make much difference id much prefer to use it for bills and il keep my savings in my own bank so i know were they are

It might be worth calling Nationwide and requesting the application is cancelled or if the account has been opened if it can be closed. I would then monitor you credit record periodically.
