buying a used car

The car I'd like is not massively popular in availability. Thus far, I've been monitoring the vw used cars website. There's one I'm watching - 11 reg, 25k on the clock. It was priced at 15k (which I felt was overpriced). Over christmas they knocked £500 off. I suspect that a bit more will fall off the price around 1 March, when the car will be 3 years old. But, it is from a dealership. Does that mean more security I wonder? Is it worth paying the extra moolah for that security?
Or is it merely overpriced? As I found another that is 6 months older, only got 14k on the clock, but is 3500 cheaper. Downside (perceived at least) is that it isn't from a dealer, but an unaffiliated car sales place.
Looks to be a small-ish firm. website alleges they're a "family business". Not local (leicester) so I don't have any local information on how good a company they are, or whether they're dodgy as hell.
I appreciate that a dealership is likely to have a slightly inflated price, but am wondering if 3500 is an excessive price for that peace of mind? Or am I better chancing saving 3500 but keeping it for the repairs that may come about?
I can't afford to buy new, so am looking at my car of choice 2nd hand. But because I'm looking at a hard top cabriolet, I am perhaps worrying a little more than I may need?
If I were to buy from the non-dealer, then go with warranty direct, that'd cost me about 1k for 3 years cover. I'd still save circa £2500, however are these extended warranties worthwhile?
Your thoughts are welcome...:)

It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

As long at it has full service history, buy from the cheaper dealer, do the normal checks and buy £3500 of premium bonds. If you feel like you need an extended warranty, read and UNDERSTAND the terms and conditions and decide then if its worth buying."Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0

If you keep hamsters then you can shred the warranty and use it for hamster bedding.
The cars are always overpriced. Thats how they make a profit. If you pay the screen price then they get a free holiday at your expense.
Sometimes the internet may show the same car at a lower price.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Why buy from a company that is not local and you don't know anything about them? What are you going to do if you have to take the car back for repairs having driven the car home and found faults?
If you can hold on until 1st March there should be a lot more used VWs around.0 -
