HSE Central Heating Service Cover
I have had a service contract with HSE to cover my boiler and central heating since 2009. When the engineers came to carry out the annual service on Thursday they refused to do it as the boiler is apparently too high on the wall and it is not safe to access using a ladder. They went away and their manager phoned to say that safety is at their core and that they can no longer fulfill our contract and it is cancelled.
Well 16 months ago it was OK when they last serviced it, and British Gas didn't have a problem when they installed it.
Taking the issue of safety aside, the HSE representative stated it was fortunate that it wasn't a repair that was required as they would not have been able to access the boiler.
My thoughts are that I have been paying £17.90 a month for 16 months since the last engineers successful visit when height wasn't a problem until Thursday. Should I ask for my money back as they wouldn't have been able to fulfill their contract?

No, as the cover was in place until they cancelled it.No free lunch, and no free laptop

I wrote to HSE and they agreed with my take on the contract and I received all of my monthly payments back since the last service. Nearly £300, enough to buy a laptop. I'm sure that you are happy for me macman.0

If you go for another service contract it maybe also worth asking what is NOT covered. I got stung by british gas homecare. I'm not too happy about gas in general but thought if I had it serviced by an established gas company it should be safe as it can be.
About 5 years ago my boiler stopped working so I phoned for an engineer. A day or so later they came out and diagnosed the heat exchanger had failed. I asked when it will be repaired and was surprised to hear it wasn't covered and I would need a new boiler. I would agreed with them if it was a very old boiler but it was only 7 years old. A quote from BG was £3k - went all electric from then on.0
