Just a note to everyone who needs to complete a tax return - deadline is by 31 Jan. Be aware that if you come across Tax Return Gateway and return your self assessment through them - you will be charged for £150. There is no need to use this type of agency as you can submit your return directly to HM Revenue and Customs FREE of charge. This is what I thought I was doing, not realising that Tax Return Gateway is a private company acting as a middleman. These types of companies should be banned!!!!

For what reason?
The site has made it perfectly clear what service they provide, along with a comparison to HMRC and also a link to their site.

Another one? Must be that time of year.
My real question is, why would anyone believe that you need submit a tax return to anyone other than HMRC?
The easiest way to stop these companies is to cost them money, if no one uses them in future they will have to stop, but for that people might have to start reading what they are paying for.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. How could you possibly not know? This paragraph is on their homepage and not hidden away anywhere,
We are not connected to or affiliated with HMRC, DWP or any other official government body. We offer a bespoke, value for money, tax return assistance service for which we levy a charge. You may submit your tax return directly to HMRC at no charge, without the benefits of our services, by visiting the official website. It's someone else's fault.0 -

I might send my story, it goes - I'm not an idiot, I can read, I've completed tax returns online since 2004 & yet so far haven't accidentally paid loads of money to a company to press a few buttons!
Got a funny feeling my story which 99.9% of the population can familiarize themselves with he won't be interested in!0 -

I think you have to have permission from MSE to post stuff like you have.
From MSE rules:I'm a journalist, I posted asking people to get in touch, but my post's gone. Why?
TV companies, newspapers and researchers are not allowed to post on the forum asking for case studies. If we allowed this, the forum would be flooded with requests.
If you're looking for case studies, please read the media enquiries section of the Contact Us page for the email address relevant to you. A member of the MSE Team will get back to you when they can.
If you're an ordinary forum user wanting to post a survey on our forum, eg a student looking for help with your studies you can post your survey, once only, on our Surveys board.
If you spot a case study request posted by anyone other than an MSE Team member (see Who are the paid MSE Team? for how to recognise them), please click on the red triangle in their post to report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.0 -
Another thought came to me, many people have posted this same thing on numerous MSE boards all with the intention of 'warning others'. Ironically, these have been posted now for a few weeks, so none of them bothered to check it out, yet feel that others will be 'saved' by their own warning.
If a newspaper does carry this story I hope they are truthful with what they say, we don't want the Daily Mail type headline 'site set to con thousands' which is not true as there is no con. Neither though do we want the sort of story that makes those falling for it lok pathetic and stupid. I suspect the people falling for this are perhaps the less computer or financial savvy type and it would be a shame to allow oneself to be ridiculed in the National Press.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I would not consider myself brighter than average, I'm just a normal person- yet I have managed to successfully upload my details direct to HMRC for years as well.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
